The Humane Society of the United States is the largest animal protection organization in America. Their work focuses not only on saving and protecting companion animals but also animals in laboratories, entertainment, farm animals, puppy mills, horses, animals being used for fur, seals, dolphins, sharks, whales and other wildlife. They also fight to end animal cruelty, neglect and fighting, provide veterinary services and advocate through animals through public policy and legislation.
The Humane Society of the United States and their affiliates directly care for or service more than 100,000 animals each year. They also provide local education and training programs to help affiliates better service their local communities.
Fred Meyers, one of the founders of the Humane Society of the United States put it well when he said “All thoughtful persons recognize that cruelty is an evil that should be eradicated from our society, not merely for the sake of animals, but for our own good.”
Thanks to some of their legislative work and influence, in 1985, malicious animal cruelty was a felony in only four states. Now malicious animal cruelty and dog fighting are felonies in all 50 states. They also support an ever-growing number of school districts, universities and hospitals adopting “Meatless Monday,” as well as several other programs and initiatives.
